Johnna demonstrating to members how to make her paste food

In the Charleston Showa Koi Club we are lucky enough to have the enthusiastic Johnna Hansen as a member.  As well as being one of our KHA trainees she has also done a lot of research into the nutrients that our Koi require.  She adapted a recipe from Bill in the UK to produce a paste food recipe that provides all of the nutrients our Koi require.  She has also made up batches of the food for our members. Johnna has also kindly allowed us to publish her recipe on the web site.

Ingredients

10 small shrimp (heads on) cooked, save water
1/2 cup cooked and chopped salmon
½ cup other fish cooked and chopped
½ slice cooked beef liver
One handful of greens (spinach)
½ cup wheat germ
½ cup koiclay
½ cup seaweed flour
3 packets of knox gelatin
1 cup Orange juice
1 squirt of baby vitamins
1/8 C. cod liver oil

Directions

Powder wheat germ in blender, add to a bowl with all other dry ingredients.  Blend seafood, liver and greens in blender with 1 cup of orange juice, until slurry. Add baby Vitamins and oil. You should get 2 cups of protein slurry from this.

Add ½ cup of saved warm water to gelatin and dissolve, add to blender and mix well.

Pour blender contents into bowl with dry ingredients and mix well with

You hands. Patty out and refrigerate.  The food can be frozen to feed at a later date.

Information

The addition of salmon provides calcium and phosphorus…aids in assimilating vitamin A (carotene)

The green leafy vegetables provides vitamin C…folic acid…vitamin B5…riboflavin..

The liver provides vitamin B2….B5…B12…H…folic acid…

I think that our fish eat better than our members!
